Technical description of The Power Buoy

The Power Buoy System is a taut moored facility, consisting of a floating buoyant structure moored by multiple tethers to a gravity base on the seabed. Further details on each element of the Power Buoy System - the floating buoyant structure, the gravity base and the tether system - can be accessed by clicking each of the links provided below:

The Power Buoy System can be used for a number of applications, including:

  • Power supply and control to subsea facilities, including subsea production, power boosting etc.;
  • Standalone power supply to offshore surface facilities (platforms or floating facilities); and
  • Sub-sea storage system heating, monitoring and conditioning.

Basis of design

The Power Buoy System and its associated facilities have been designed in accordance with all applicable UK statutory and regulatory requirements.

Verification of the design has been undertaken by approved Independent Verification Bodies for all phases of the development in accordance with applicable Verification Schemes.

The Power Buoy System and all non-replaceable permanent equipment on it have a design life of 25 years, and are designed to remain fully operational in 100 year storm conditions.

All compartments within the Buoy are classified as non-hazardous according to the Institute of Petroleum IP15 Area Classification Code for Petroleum Installations.

Suitability of the Power Buoy System for specific oil & gas field conditions

The Power Buoy System is designed for certain operating conditions.

In order to assist interested parties in determining whether the Power Buoy System is suitable for their requirements, an Application Requirements Questionnaire is attached. Where appropriate, interested parties are invited to complete this questionnaire and submit it to Ocean Resource Ltd who will respond within 7 days of receipt.
